Carlos Sainz returns after missing the F1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and wins his first race of the season in the Australian Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc follows him in second place securing a Ferrari 1-2 while the reigning champion, Max Verstappen, fails to finish the race after a DNF in the 3rd lap.
Race Progression

Carlos Sainz managed to maintain the lead of the Australian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen retired and secured his first win of the season. Charles Leclerc followed him in second. The McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured 3rd and 4th, respectively. The race was woeful for Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton suffering from an engine failure and George Russell crashing out.
F1 Championship Standings
After Red Bull Racing’s tough weekend in Australia, Ferrari has managed to close the gap to the F1 championship leaders. McLaren has built a sizable lead over Mercedes and Aston Martin is also very close to overtaking Mercedes in the standings. Yuki’s performance gave Racing Bulls some much needed points. In the drivers standing, Charles Leclerc overtakes Sergio Perez and edges closer to Max Verstappen.
Lap Time Visualization
Modified & Updating The Visuals
In our latest update, we’ve refined the data visualization approach for Formula 1 race analysis. Key enhancements include combining driver charts with the zoomed chart over the overview chart to give more detail. The comparison chart now is more clear in distinguishing the drivers with the dashed and solid lines. This multi-layered approach aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the race dynamics and team strategies.
Notes from the Creator
With the two week break, I have been hard at work developing the regression model and have made significant progress in getting a model that effectively predicts lap times in Formula 1 using over 20 features. I have started implementing machine learning algorithms to improve the capabilities of the prediction models. I hope to have the model up and running in the coming weeks and implement it on the website to allow you guys to experiment with it. For the data science guys, here is a sneak peek at the model.

Closing Remarks
In wrapping up our report on the F1 Australian Grand Prix, the data visualization element was improved and the prediction model is being fine tuned. The visualization improvements offer deeper insights into race dynamics, but the full potential of our analysis awaits the integration of comprehensive variables into the model. The regression model is currently being fine tuned and I am experimenting with various machine learning algorithms to improve the effectiveness. So far, the model is quite effective in predicting lap times and my goal is to integrate the model on this site so you all can experiment with various strategies. I am very excited for what the future holds for this model in predicting lap times for Formula 1 races.
