About Emilia Romagna

Emilia Romagna Flag

Emilia-Romagna, a region in northern Italy, has a rich and diverse history that stretches back to ancient times. It was an important area during the Roman Empire, known for its roads and cities such as Rimini and Parma. After the fall of Rome, it saw a succession of rulers, including the Byzantines, Lombards, and Franks. The Middle Ages marked a significant period for Emilia-Romagna, especially with the rise of powerful city-states like Bologna, which became a major center of learning and culture. The region was also notable for its significant role in the development of Romanesque and Renaissance architecture, evident in its many cathedrals and palaces. In the 19th century, Emilia-Romagna was at the forefront of the Italian unification movement, and it has since been known for its strong agricultural economy, cultural contributions, and as a hub of political and social innovation, being the birthplace of influential personalities like the filmmaker Federico Fellini and the car manufacturer Enzo Ferrari.

The inaugural race was held in 1980 at the circuit under the Italian Grand Prix before being changed to the San Marino Grand Prix from 1981 to 2006. F1 stopped racing at the track in 2007 which prompted the owners of the circuit to renovate it. Formula 1 returned in 2020 under the Emila Romagna Grand Prix. The race has been held with the exception of 2023 where heavy flooding did not allowed for racing. The circuit was originally constructed in 1950 and was later named in honor of Enzo and his son Alfredo.

The circuit has a storied history but also has one of the darkest days during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix which tragically took the lives of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger. During qualifying on Saturday, Ratzenberg crashed head on with the wall at Villeneuve corner going 190 mph after Simtek lost his front wing. The impact fractured his skull and killed him instantly. Ayrton Senna crashed on lap 7 in the Tamburello corner colliding directly into a concrete wall after his steering column broke. He later died from his injuries at the hospital. Senna had an Austrian flag which he was going to wave after the race in memoriam of Roland Ratzenberger. The Brazilian government declared 3 days of mourning after his death. The death of these two drivers prompted the safety regulations to be changed to improve driver safety.
