About Canada

Flag of Canada

Canada’s history is a rich tapestry woven from the diverse threads of Indigenous, French, and British influences. Before European contact, the land was inhabited by a multitude of Indigenous peoples, each with their own distinct cultures and histories. In the late 15th century, the arrival of European explorers marked the beginning of a new era. France and Britain vied for control over the region, with the Treaty of Paris in 1763 ceding French territories to the British. This set the stage for the gradual emergence of a distinct Canadian identity, culminating in the Confederation of 1867, whereupon Canada became a self-governing entity within the British Empire. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, Canada has developed into a culturally rich and ethnically diverse nation, celebrated for its vast landscapes and commitment to multilateralism and social justice.
