About Belgium

Flag of Belgium

Belgium’s history is marked by its strategic position at the crossroads of Western Europe, which has made it a site of significant cultural and political influence and frequent conflicts. The region known as Belgium was part of the Roman Empire before falling under the control of various European powers, including the Spanish and the Austrians. In the early 19th century, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of the Netherlands. However, in 1830, Belgium gained its independence through the Belgian Revolution, which was partly fueled by cultural and economic differences. The new nation established a constitutional monarchy under King Leopold I. Belgium’s location continued to play a pivotal role in European affairs, especially during the two World Wars, during which it was a major battleground. Post-World War II, Belgium became a founding member of both NATO and the European Union, reflecting its ongoing influence in European and international politics.

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, nestled in the Belgian Ardennes, boasts a storied history that has solidified its reputation as one of the most challenging and revered racetracks in the world. The circuit was inaugurated in 1921, initially featuring public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy, and Stavelot, creating a notoriously fast and dangerous 14.9-kilometer track. Famous for its unpredictable weather and demanding corners, particularly the iconic Eau Rouge and Raidillon combination, Spa has hosted numerous prestigious motorsport events, including the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix. Over the decades, the track has undergone several modifications to enhance safety and competitiveness, reducing its length to the current 7 kilometers while retaining much of its original character and appeal. This blend of historical significance and dynamic racing continues to endear Spa-Francorchamps to drivers and fans alike.

After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Mclaren has overtaken Ferrari in the F1 Constructors Championship for 2nd place. Lando Norris could have made more progress in closing the gap to Max Verstappen had he not handed the win to Oscar Piastri. Lewis Hamilton has overtaken Sergio Perez in the drivers championship and a strong weekend from George Russell could see him also overtake Sergio Perez. Nico Hulkenberg, Yuki Tsunoda, and Lance Stroll are neck in neck in the drivers championship and all race for different teams. The midfield battle could get quite exciting in the coming races.
